Standard of Perspective

Running Time : 15min 10sec

The actual beginning of this work was the question ¡±Does there exist in the world a being that can be done without (is useless)?¡± I thought that those things that to us seem useless, or that we would avoid, may merely be existing where they simply ought to. When I have negative thoughts toward an object, if I were to place my frame of reference for judging that object elsewhere, it becomes possible for me to look at that same object with different emotions. This, just by shifting momentarily the frame of reference with which I deal with that object.

Let me pose an interesting and easy yet difficult question.

A child dropped the plastic toy he was playing with on the curb. A small piece of the toy broke off. The mother picked up the child who was crying because his toy was broken, and continued on her way. The child and the toy both left the site but the small piece of plastic that had broken off remained in the same place. What is this piece? Is it the toy?

There is a small piece of broken-off plastic on the curb.
Looking at this small piece, people have a hard time imagining how the piece existed when it performed its intended function.
What is this piece? Is it junk?

I picked up the piece and used it as material for my work. In my work, the piece is being used differently, integrated in to the work seamlessly as if this was where it was intended in the first place to be used.
What is this piece? Is it a work of art?

The ages pass and the work is destroyed by the elements. That piece in the work again drops to the ground. What is this piece? It is junk?

We desire changes to the internal and external environment according to our needs, and live on easily adapting to these changes. However, we ourselves are not free from the restrictions placed on us by what we see, that is, what is visible. Therefore we tend to place more weight on visible, external change rather than internal change. This fails to bring about fundamental change, and instead causes us to seek yet more external change. Unless our standards change, this cycle does not stop.

Change is continuous, not just for the external elements that we can see, including changes in the world and material changes, but also for internal elements including the subconscious. Because we fail to focus on the small fragments of change that are not visible to our eyes, and fail therefore to connect them, we are unaware of the great meaning these small changes could have if connected together. And these individual pieces that we fail to forget come to hide away deep inside in some inaccessible corner. This not only pertains to the spiritual realm of each individual, but to the basic nature of mankind, his customs and knowledge, such as culture, created through history, and the various emotions derived from those myriad relationships that are not visible to the eye.

Focusing on the objects that change when the standards of our vision and of our gaze are shifted, we will be able to communicate with those things within that exist but are invisible.
Another point we must hold in mind is that despite this, what we see and feel is not all.
